Wedding in South Korea
Modern Korean wedding is not like any old wedding ceremony or Western wedding. her new tradition was developed quite recently, in the fifties, but follow them in Korea all.
Since the 1960s the main, though not the only, venue of the wedding ceremony became “the halls of rituals” – «erikjan”. Despite the uncertain name, these institutions are not “rituals”, namely the wedding.
Quite often the wedding is celebrated in the restaurant, in the hall which held all the necessary rites (exactly the same as in “esitjeni”). Some families prefer to spend the whole holiday at home, but there are now relatively few.
In old times a very great importance was attached to the selection of auspicious wedding days and even hours. This selection was carried out after consultation with a professional fortuneteller. In General this custom is still alive in our days, though now with a fortuneteller consulted more often about the only choice of the day (but not hours) of the wedding. Determine the day according to the old lunar calendar, not according to the accepted now in South Korea the Western (solar).
Extremely unfavorable for weddings is considered the leap month, which from time to time inserted in far Eastern lunar-solar calendar. During this month the number of orders in the “ecijano” is reduced many times. So, in 1995 in a leap month, then came on October, the number of orders in one of the most famous «ecijanos” of Gwangju decreased in comparison with the regular October about 15 times.
The wedding is usually prescribed to daytime, with a majority of seeks that it took place on a Sunday or in the afternoon on Saturday, that is, outside time, when the celebration can come everyone is invited. Some weddings take place in normal working days, but this is quite rare. Therefore, the Ministry of social Affairs in 1996, have reduced the prices for the use of “nickaname” on weekdays, by 50%. These pictures, like many others, in Korea are tightly controlled by the state.
Before the wedding, the bride visits a hairdresser and wears a wedding dress. With the 1950s in Korea in Vogue and have become almost a mandatory part of the wedding ritual (including secular) luxury white dress, almost indistinguishable from the Western samples. Most brides sew the dress again. The groom is usually dressed in an expensive suit Western-style, sometimes – even in a frock coat. The coat, as something expensive, but in real life you don’t need, almost never buy, and rent for a wedding, but the costume for the occasion and can be purchased.
Shortly before the appointed time of the marriage in the “erikjan» guests start to arrive. For the bride and her closest friends there is a special “waiting room”, other guests immediately upon arrival are inside, while the men are waiting to start the ceremony right at the entrance, exchanging greetings. There are parents of the groom and bride who also greet arriving guests.
Korean weddings are extremely crowded. For the wedding it is customary to invite relatives, including distant, colleagues, former classmates, so normally at the wedding is a few hundred, and in some cases – and few thousand guests.
Wedding – a very costly event, however, it costs still cheaper than it may seem at first glance. To reduce the cost burden helps the custom that requires all invited to bring to the wedding envelopes with money as gifts and handed the young. «the Glove» gifts for Korean weddings are almost never awarded.
The amount that one gives in such a way, can be very different, but in most cases the envelope is several tens of thousands of won (10 thousand won – about 8 dollars). Immediately upon arrival in the “erikjan» guests put on I have installed at the entrance of the tray envelopes with money and sign in a special list. By tradition, all the envelopes are definitely watermarked, so the owners always know how generous were the one or another guest.
